Lyle Ishida

LYLE M. ISHIDA is a senior litigation and business attorney with decades of experience advising clients in complex commercial, real estate, business, and appellate matters. Clients rely on Mr. Ishida not only for his courtroom and appellate experience, but also for his strategic judgment in high-stakes disputes and negotiated resolutions where legal, financial, and business considerations intersect.

His practice encompasses business and contract disputes, commercial lease matters, real property disputes, insurance coverage issues, environmental and intellectual property litigation, construction defect claims, mechanics' lien matters, and related civil disputes. He also advises clients on business and real estate matters arising from active or potential disputes, including lease renegotiations, settlement structures, and other negotiated resolutions.

Mr. Ishida has played a key strategic role in complex trust and estate-related litigation and beneficiary settlement matters, where his broader litigation judgment and business-oriented approach have helped clients navigate sensitive, high-value disputes.

A seasoned appellate practitioner, he has personally appeared and argued before both Hawaiʻi state and federal appellate courts. In litigation and pre-litigation matters, he helps clients evaluate not only the legal merits of a dispute, but also the broader strategic path — including negotiation, mediation, arbitration, settlement, or trial when necessary 

Mr. Ishida has been rated AV Preeminent® by Martindale-Hubbell and has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America© and Super Lawyers®. He is admitted to practice in Hawaiʻi, Illinois (inactive), the District of Columbia (ret.), the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, cum laude, from the University of Washington, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma and was a member of Beta Alpha Psi. He later earned his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law and his Master of Management from Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management 

Mr. Ishida began his legal career in Honolulu in 1987 with a prominent statewide law firm, becoming a partner in 1994. In 1997, he joined his present firm, Tom Petrus & Miller, LLLC, focusing on business matters and commercial litigation.

He has also served the legal and civic communities in Hawaiʻi, including on the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection of the Supreme Court of Hawaiʻi from 2008 to 2023, where he served as Vice-Chair, and on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the City and County of Honolulu from 2011 to 2020, serving as Chair from 2015 to 2020.
